The Dreaded SciFi Challenge
If you go back and watch the end of Episode 4, you’ll see — among everybody else jumping for joy — one person cringing noticeably when the Science Fiction topic is announced. That would be yours truly. Prior to this assignment I’d never written, or even read, for that matter, any Science Fiction. After 30-plus years with my husband, I’d gained an appreciation for Star Trek (in its many incarnations) by osmosis, but other than that the subject held no interest for me as a reader or a writer.
So, I did as I’d done with poetry, and put on my research hat. I learned some terms, found out that there is a difference between fantasy and science fiction, and got to work. Truthfully, the end product was more of a locally-themed comic monologue delivered by an alien, which the author hoped would pass for sci fi. My actor did a great job (there he is in the promo shot), and I squeaked by to Week 6 by the skin of my teeth, making it into the final three.
